Making the Right Preschool Choice for Your Child

Is it time to send your child to preschool already? Just yesterday, he was a baby. Now he’s a big boy, ready to dash off to school. Of course, you’ll want to choose the right school for your child, and while that seems like a daunting task, it’s much easier than you think. These helpful hints will help guide you through the process of choosing a proper preschool.

Establish your priorities
Figure out the needs of your family. Is it better for your child’s preschool to be closer to your home or closer to your office? Do you work later hours and need someone to watch your child for longer? Is there a specific curriculum you would prefer for your child? Maybe you would rather send him to a religious preschool or a Montessori program, but whatever you decide, you need to make sure it’s right for your family, especially when it comes to your child.

Do your research
Other parents you already know can be a great resource for finding good preschools around you. Ask them about their experiences with the schools you’re considering. Additionally, Child Care Aware has a hotline that can provide you with childcare resources in your area. You’ll discover things like which schools are accredited and much more. Child Care Aware has a toll-free number to assist you with your preschool questions: 800-424-2246.

Take a look and check it out
After you narrow down your preschool choices, go look around at the facilities. You can meet the staff and check out the classrooms. Take some time to really observe. Make sure you note the class sizes, what kind of activities are going on, and how teachers are with the children. The director should be able to answer all your questions and if you feel comfortable with the answers, it is likely a good fit. This is also the time to inquire about safety precautions to keep the children safe from a dangerous situation. If anything about your visit makes you uncomfortable, use your intuition and keep looking.

Bring your child
When you feel comfortable with a couple of the preschools, have your child come visit with you. Let him meet his teacher and the other students too. Have him see the playground and all the cool things he’ll get to learn and do while there. Watch how he responds to everything. If he seems happier about one more than the other, then it will be easy to choose. When your child feels comfortable about the school, you know he will be getting the best possible preschool experience and you can put your mind at ease.
