Tips for New Mothers Returning to Work


It has become a common practice for mothers to go back to work a few months after giving birth. It is also common for most to feel guilty or be uncertain. You know that you need to go back to work to help support the family, but thinking of leaving your child makes you feel guilty. That’s a situation moms often find themselves in. So how do you prepare yourself?


First, Find a Dependable Child Care You can either consider using a local child care provider or facilities, or simply make arrangements with someone you know. To make sure that you are getting the right provider, you could always ask recommendations from friends, neighbors or your baby’s doctor.


Go and Talk to Your Boss You can do this while taking your maternity leave. Talk to your employer and clarify your job schedule as well as duties to know what is to be expected of you. If needed, you may ask about the possibility of working part time or at least flexible working hours.


About Breast Feeding Do you plan to continue breast feeding once you return to work? If you do, talk to your employer and ask about a private room that has an outlet for the breast pump. It is also best to have an electric pump that lets you pump your breasts at the same time. If this is not possible, there is always the option of renting one.


Also, start adjusting your nursing schedule at least two weeks before you are scheduled to return to work. Ensure that you are able to pump at least once every day and nurse the baby before as well as after your work hours. Then, have someone to feed your baby with your prepared bottle of breast milk.


The Best Time to Return to Work For you to be able to adjust well, you may consider going back to work at a later day of the week. That way, your first week at work will also be shorter, just enough to keep you back on track.


Dealing with Separation Anxiety In a survey made, it showed that about 67% of moms who were part of the survey experienced separation anxiety when it was time for them to return to work. If you are experience this, know that there are always means you can better handle it. It may take some time before you can be fully adjusted, but placing a photo of your child in your workplace helps well. Also, your child will be fine and will have no trouble when left with a childcare provider. This is the case as long as they are fed well, changed as well as treated with love. You have nothing to worry about.


Keeping tabs on your baby is fine. As a mom, you would always want to do this and know what your child is doing while you are at work. However, it is not a good idea to call every hour to check on your baby. If you want make sure that your baby is in best hands, ensure you find a childcare provider you know you can trust.
